No hot water is almost always one of three things: a tripped breaker or earth leakage, a failed element, or a failed thermostat. Check them in that order — electrical supply first, then thermostat, then element. If the breaker holds when you reset it but the water stays cold after two hours, the element or thermostat has gone. If the breaker trips again immediately, stop resetting it; that is a water-into-electrics fault.
Common causes
- Tripped DB breaker or earth leakage on the geyser circuit, often after a load-shedding surge
- Burned-out element, usually from scale build-up insulating the heating surface
- Failed thermostat leaving the geyser cold or only lukewarm
- Power tripped during load shedding and never reset at the board
- Isolator switch at the geyser switched off during unrelated roof or ceiling work

When to call a professional
If resetting the breaker does not restore hot water within about two hours, the element or thermostat needs replacing. Call immediately instead if the breaker trips the moment you reset it, or if the earth leakage drops — that means water has reached an electrical part. A plumber will drain just enough water to swap the element, fit a new gasket, and pressure test before refilling.
