Quick answer
Lukewarm water usually means the thermostat is set too low, has drifted out of calibration, or one element in a dual-element geyser has burnt out. Set the thermostat to 60–65°C and give it one full heating cycle. If it is still lukewarm after that, the thermostat or an element has failed. A geyser that used to be hot and is now only warm has almost always lost half its heating capacity.

- Thermostat set below 55°C, which is also too cool to control legionella
- Thermostat drifted out of calibration and cutting out early
- One element of a dual-element geyser burnt out, halving output
- Mixing valve set incorrectly after an installation or repair
- Scale on the element slowing heat transfer so the cycle never reaches setpoint
- Hot water being drawn faster than the geyser can recover during peak morning use
What you can do now
- 1Check the thermostat dial — target 60–65°C for both safety and bacteria control
- 2Give it one complete heating cycle, around two hours, before judging the result
- 3Test the hottest tap closest to the geyser to rule out a mixer fault at a single fitting
- 4Note whether it is lukewarm from the first draw or only after a few minutes — the first points at the thermostat, the second at capacity
When to call a professional
If raising the thermostat does not fix it within one heating cycle, the thermostat or an element is at fault and both are quick swaps. Call sooner if the water is lukewarm at every tap and the geyser is over eight years old — that combination often means the cylinder is scaling internally and a service is overdue.
