If you have ever replaced a geyser, you have met SANS 10254 — even if you did not know its name. It is the standard that decides whether your geyser installation is safe, compliant and insurable. Here is what it actually requires.
What SANS 10254 is
SANS 10254 is the South African National Standard for installing fixed electric storage water heaters — geysers. It defines the safety components and methods every compliant installation must include. When a PIRB-registered plumber issues a Plumbing COC after geyser work, they are certifying it meets SANS 10254.
What it requires
- A correctly installed drip tray draining to a visible overflow
- A temperature-and-pressure (T&P) safety valve
- Vacuum breakers on the hot and cold lines
- A pressure-control/safety valve
- Insulation of the first metre of pipe, correct positioning and support

Why your insurer cares
Most geyser-related claims — burst geysers, ceiling water damage — hinge on whether the installation was compliant. A geyser installed to SANS 10254 with a valid COC protects your claim; a non-compliant one can see it rejected.
