When a geyser dies, the first question is "which brand should I buy?" — but it's the wrong first question. Sizing, installation and warranty matter far more than the badge. Here's what actually determines whether your new geyser lasts.
Brands: most reputable ones are fine
SABS-approved brands — Kwikot, Heatech, Gap, Franke and others — are all solid. The differences between reputable brands are smaller than the difference a good or bad installation makes.
What actually matters
- Correct size for your household (see geyser sizing)
- SABS approval and a high-pressure rating suited to your supply
- A solid manufacturer warranty
- A compliant installation to SANS 10254 with a Plumbing COC
Why the install beats the brand
Most premature geyser failures come down to installation and maintenance — wrong valves, no drip tray, unmanaged high pressure, no servicing — not the brand. A correctly installed, serviced mid-range geyser will outlast a premium one fitted badly (see SANS 10254).
Think running cost too
Pair any geyser with a GeyserWise controller, or consider a solar geyser or heat pump for big savings. We recommend the right size and type for your home, not the cheapest box. See geyser installation or ask us.
