An Electrical Certificate of Compliance certifies that the electrical installation meets SANS 10142. It is required for property transfer and after any new installation, alteration or addition — a DB upgrade, a solar system, a new outbuilding, an added circuit. It must be issued by a registered person in their own name, and it covers the installation as it stands on the day of inspection.
What you can do now
- 1Book before listing, and again after any electrical work is completed
- 2Keep records of all electrical work done since the last certificate
- 3Check the previous COC's date — two years is the generally accepted validity for transfer
- 4Verify the issuing person's registration number appears on the certificate
- 5Get any remedial items itemised in writing before authorising the work
When to call a professional
Arrange certification when selling, after a DB upgrade, and before solar commissioning. Certificates cannot be issued retrospectively for work someone else did badly, so if remedial work is needed it has to be completed first. A registered electrician inspects, carries out the remedial work and issues the certificate in their registered name.
