A weak flush is a low cistern water level, a worn flush valve, calcium build-up blocking the rim jets, or a partial blockage in the trap. The bucket test separates them in seconds: pour a bucket of water straight into the bowl, and if it clears strongly the bowl and trap are fine and the problem is in the cistern. If the bucket also struggles, you have a blockage.

When to call a professional
If the bucket flush also fails, you have a blockage rather than a cistern problem and it needs clearing. If the bucket flush is strong but the toilet is not, a plumber will adjust the fill level and replace the flush valve. Persistent weak flushing after both have been dealt with usually means the rim jets are scaled internally and the pan needs descaling or replacing.
