Push-button cisterns use plastic mechanisms that wear, stick with mineral build-up, or snap. In most cases the cartridge unclips and swaps out in about ten minutes, but it has to match the brand and model — these are not universal parts, and a near-match will not seal. If you cannot source the matching cartridge, a plumber will — they carry the common brands and can identify a mechanism by sight. Call rather than improvising with a near-match: a mechanism that does not seal properly turns into a running toilet, which quietly wastes far more than the correct part would have cost.
