The battery is the heart — and the biggest cost — of any solar or inverter system. Treat it well and it lasts a decade; abuse it and you are replacing it in a few years. Here is how to get the most from it.

    How long they really last

Modern lithium (LiFePO4) batteries typically last 8–12 years or roughly 4,000–6,000 charge cycles — a world away from old lead-acid batteries that managed a few years at best. Actual lifespan depends on quality, depth of discharge, temperature and correct setup.

    What shortens battery life

    • Repeated very deep discharges
    • Excessive heat (poor ventilation or direct sun)
    • Cheap, low-quality cells
    • Incorrect inverter charge settings
    • Chronic undersizing — a battery forced to work too hard

    Why lithium wins

Lithium lets you safely use most of its capacity, lasts three to four times longer than lead-acid, charges faster and is maintenance-free. The higher upfront cost is offset by far longer life and more usable energy — see our lithium battery backup.

    Make yours last

Size it correctly so it is not constantly deep-discharged, keep it cool and ventilated, use a quality battery and inverter, and have the settings configured properly at install. An annual system check catches problems early. Planning a system? We will size the battery right — see solar power.
