"How long does my Electrical COC last?" is one of the most common questions we get from sellers and buyers — and the answer has a crucial catch about changes to your installation. Here it is, clearly.

    The general rule: two years

An Electrical COC is generally valid for two yearsprovided no electrical work or alterations have been done to the installation since it was issued. The certificate certifies the installation at the moment of inspection.

The catch: any change invalidates it

If you add a circuit, have a repair done, install an EV charger or aircon, or alter the fixed wiring in any way after the COC was issued, the certificate no longer reflects your installation — and a new COC is needed for the changed work. This is why reputable electricians issue a COC after notifiable work.

    Selling your home

You need a valid COC to transfer — typically not older than two years and with no work done since. If your last one is older, or work has happened, a fresh inspection and COC are required for the sale.

    Get it sorted

We inspect, issue valid COCs, and fix any non-compliances found (see SANS 10142). Planning to sell or had work done? Book a COC inspection — see electrical inspections.

    Frequently Asked Questions

An Electrical Certificate of Compliance is generally valid for two years, provided no electrical work or alterations have been done to the installation since it was issued. Any change to the fixed wiring after that — additions, repairs, a new circuit — invalidates the certificate for the changed installation and a new COC is needed.
