"How long does my Electrical COC last?" is one of the most common questions we get from sellers and buyers — and the answer has a crucial catch about changes to your installation. Here it is, clearly.
The general rule: two years
An Electrical COC is generally valid for two years — provided no electrical work or alterations have been done to the installation since it was issued. The certificate certifies the installation at the moment of inspection.
The catch: any change invalidates it
If you add a circuit, have a repair done, install an EV charger or aircon, or alter the fixed wiring in any way after the COC was issued, the certificate no longer reflects your installation — and a new COC is needed for the changed work. This is why reputable electricians issue a COC after notifiable work.
Selling your home
You need a valid COC to transfer — typically not older than two years and with no work done since. If your last one is older, or work has happened, a fresh inspection and COC are required for the sale.
