Every Electrical COC in South Africa rests on one document: SANS 10142. If you are selling a home, adding solar, or just want to know your wiring is safe, it helps to understand what this standard actually is.

    What SANS 10142 is

SANS 10142 is the South African National Standard for the wiring of premises — the code that defines how electrical installations must be designed, installed, earthed and protected to be safe. When a registered electrician issues an Electrical Certificate of Compliance, they are certifying the installation meets SANS 10142.

    Why it matters to you

    • Safety — it is the difference between an installation that protects you and one that can start a fire or cause a shock.
    • Selling — a valid COC (i.e. SANS 10142 compliance) is required to transfer a property.
    • Insurance — after an electrical fault or fire, a non-compliant installation gives an insurer grounds to dispute a claim.

    Common reasons installations fail

Missing or faulty earth-leakage protection, incorrect wiring colours, non-compliant or overloaded DB boards, poor earthing, and unsafe pool or outdoor wiring are the usual culprits we find on inspection.

How to know where you stand

The only way to be sure is an inspection by a registered electrician, who tests against SANS 10142 and either issues a COC or a clear list of remedial work. We are registered and issue valid COCs across Johannesburg — see electrical safety inspections or book an inspection.
