Ask ten homeowners when they last replaced their geyser's anode and nine will say "the what?" It is the single most overlooked piece of geyser maintenance — and the reason so many geysers fail years before they should.
What the anode does
Inside your geyser is a "sacrificial anode" — a metal rod designed to corrode instead of the steel tank. It quietly takes the corrosion that would otherwise eat your cylinder. But it is sacrificial: once it is used up, the tank itself starts to rust, and that is what eventually causes the leak that ends a geyser's life.
Why your geyser fails early
Because almost nobody replaces the anode (every 2–4 years depending on water quality), the tank begins corroding far sooner than it needs to. A geyser that could last 10–15 years with maintenance often fails in 6–8 without it — and a failed geyser usually means water damage to the ceiling below, not just a replacement.
What a proper service includes
- Check and replace the sacrificial anode
- Flush out accumulated sediment
- Test the thermostat and element
- Inspect the T&P safety valve, vacuum breaker and drip tray
