For taking the edge off a Johannesburg summer, a ceiling fan is one of the cheapest-to-run upgrades you can make. But it is heavier and more demanding to fit than a light — here is what proper installation involves.

Cheaper than aircon, by a mile

A ceiling fan uses a tiny fraction of an air conditioner's power. For most of the season, fans keep rooms comfortable for cents, with aircon reserved for the hottest days. It is a genuine running-cost win.

Why it is not a simple swap

A ceiling fan is heavy and vibrates as it spins, so it must be mounted to a secure fixing point — the existing light fitting's mount is rarely strong enough. Wired and mounted poorly, fans wobble, hum, or work loose over time, which is exactly what you do not want spinning above your bed.

    The wiring

The fan (and light, if combined) needs correct wiring, usually with a fan controller or wall switch. An electrician fits a fan-rated mount and wires it so it runs quietly for years.

    Do it right

We install ceiling fans with proper mounting and compliant wiring — and if you are weighing fans against aircon, see our aircon electrical guide. Book a ceiling-fan installation or see our electrical services.

    Frequently Asked Questions

It is more involved than swapping a light fitting: a ceiling fan is heavy and vibrates, so it must be mounted to a secure fixing point (not just the ceiling board) and wired correctly, often with a fan controller or its own switch. For safety and to avoid a fan working loose over time, an electrician should install it.
