People think of an air conditioner as a refrigeration appliance — but most aircon faults we are called to are electrical, and a surprising number of installs cut corners on the wiring. Here is the electrical side that determines whether your aircon runs reliably and stays insurable.
It needs its own circuit
An air conditioner is a substantial, frequently-cycling load. It should run on a dedicated circuit from your DB board, with the correct breaker and an isolator switch near the unit for safe servicing. Sharing a circuit with plugs or lights causes nuisance tripping and is not compliant.
Why "the aircon guy did it" is not enough
HVAC technicians handle the refrigeration — gas, mounting, drainage. But the fixed electrical connection is part of your home's installation and must be done and certified by a registered electrician with an Electrical COC. Skipping this is exactly the kind of thing that voids an insurance claim after an electrical fire.
Why your aircon keeps tripping
- Undersized or shared circuit
- Faulty isolator switch
- Moisture in the outdoor unit's wiring
- A failing compressor drawing excess current
