Why won't my smart light connect to Wi-Fi?

Smart bulbs usually fail to connect for one of three reasons: the router is broadcasting 5GHz only while most smart bulbs need 2.4GHz, the app has not been granted local network permission, or the bulb is not actually in pairing mode. Almost all of it is network configuration rather than a faulty bulb, and power-cycling the bulb three times resets most brands into pairing mode.

    Quick answer

Smart bulbs usually fail to connect for one of three reasons: the router is broadcasting 5GHz only while most smart bulbs need 2.4GHz, the app has not been granted local network permission, or the bulb is not actually in pairing mode. Almost all of it is network configuration rather than a faulty bulb, and power-cycling the bulb three times resets most brands into pairing mode.

    Common causes

    • Router broadcasting 5GHz only, or combining both bands under one SSID
    • App denied local network permission on the phone
    • Bulb not in pairing mode, indicated by a slow rather than rapid flash
    • Mesh network handing the bulb between nodes during setup
    • Network password containing characters the bulb's setup cannot handle
    • Too many devices for the router's client limit on a busy home network

    What you can do now

    1. 1Create a separate 2.4GHz SSID on the router and connect the bulb to that
    2. 2Power-cycle the bulb three times to force it back into pairing mode
    3. 3Grant the app local network permission in your phone's settings
    4. 4Stand close to the router during pairing, then move the bulb afterwards
    5. 5Temporarily disable any mesh band-steering while pairing

    When to call a professional

For whole-home smart lighting, book a proper installation rather than pairing bulbs one at a time. A designed system uses wired smart switches and a stable network layout, which behaves far better than a house full of individually paired bulbs — and it keeps working when someone switches the wall switch off, which is where bulb-based systems consistently fall down.
