Smart bulbs usually fail to connect for one of three reasons: the router is broadcasting 5GHz only while most smart bulbs need 2.4GHz, the app has not been granted local network permission, or the bulb is not actually in pairing mode. Almost all of it is network configuration rather than a faulty bulb, and power-cycling the bulb three times resets most brands into pairing mode.

A designed system uses wired smart switches and a stable network layout, which behaves far better than a house full of individually paired bulbs — and it keeps working when someone switches the wall switch off, which is where bulb-based systems consistently fall down.
