Gurgling means air is being pulled through trap water because it cannot get in the normal way. Either the main line is partly blocked and displaced air is finding the nearest escape, or the vent pipe is obstructed. Gurgling is an early-warning signal rather than a nuisance: it reliably precedes a full backup, and dealing with it now is far cheaper than dealing with sewage in a shower later.
