Why do my drains gurgle when I flush?

Gurgling means air is being pulled through trap water because it cannot get in the normal way. Either the main line is partly blocked and displaced air is finding the nearest escape, or the vent pipe is obstructed. Gurgling is an early-warning signal rather than a nuisance: it reliably precedes a full backup, and dealing with it now is far cheaper than dealing with sewage in a shower later.

    Quick answer

Gurgling means air is being pulled through trap water because it cannot get in the normal way. Either the main line is partly blocked and displaced air is finding the nearest escape, or the vent pipe is obstructed. Gurgling is an early-warning signal rather than a nuisance: it reliably precedes a full backup, and dealing with it now is far cheaper than dealing with sewage in a shower later.

    Common causes

    • Partial main-line blockage forcing air back through fixture traps
    • Vent pipe blocked by a bird nest, debris or a collapsed section
    • Tree-root intrusion progressively narrowing the sewer line
    • Bellied or sagging pipe holding water and restricting airflow
    • Municipal main partly blocked, affecting several properties at once

    What you can do now

    1. 1Note exactly which fixtures gurgle and what triggers it — flushing, the washing machine, or the bath emptying
    2. 2Check whether more than one fixture is slow as well as noisy
    3. 3Inspect the roof vent from ground level for an obvious nest or obstruction
    4. 4Ask a neighbour whether they have the same symptom, which would point at the municipal main
    5. 5Reduce water use until it is inspected — heavy discharges are what turn a gurgle into a backup

    When to call a professional

Book within the week. Gurgling drains precede full sewage backups, and the gap between the two is usually days rather than months. A drain specialist will rod or jet the line and, if it recurs, run a CCTV survey to find whether roots, a belly or a collapse is causing it — repeated clearing without a camera is money spent on the symptom.
