Upgrade your distribution board if it is more than about twenty-five years old, still uses re-wireable fuses, has no earth leakage protection, or does not comply with current SANS 10142. An upgrade is also effectively required before any major renovation, solar installation or EV charger, because the new work has to be certified and an old board will not support it.

When to call a professional
Book a compliance inspection and quote. It is far cheaper to upgrade the board as planned work than to discover mid-renovation that nothing can be certified. Ask for the quote to include earth leakage, surge protection, correct circuit separation and the Electrical COC — and make sure the certificate is issued in the registered electrician's own name.
