Every winter the same shock arrives with the electricity bill. The good news: most of the increase comes from just two things, so a little focus there beats fiddling with every plug in the house. Here's what actually works, ranked.
1. Control the geyser (biggest win)
Water heating is typically 30–40% of your bill and works hardest in winter, when cold incoming water makes the geyser run longer. Tackle it first: a GeyserWise controller to heat only around your routine, plus a geyser blanket and pipe insulation. This is the single biggest lever.
2. Heat smart, not hard
Electric resistance heaters are power-hungry. Heat the room you're in, not the whole house; use timers; and draught-proof and insulate. For sustained heating, a heat pump or gas is far cheaper to run than plug-in heaters.
3. Switch lighting to LED
If you still have halogens, LED conversion cuts lighting power by 80–90% and runs cool — a quick, permanent saving.
4. Consider solar
Winter days are shorter, but solar still offsets daytime use and, with the measures above, meaningfully lowers winter bills. We design for seasonal output.
