"How much for a JoJo tank?" is the question we field most often. The honest answer is: the tank itself is the cheap part. What you're paying for is the plinth, the pressure pump, the automatic changeover, the pre-filter, the cabling and the Plumbing COC that makes the whole thing legal and insurance-compliant. Here are real 2026 numbers from jobs we've quoted across Sandton and Midrand.

    1. The tank

    • 750L vertical: R1,950
    • 2,500L vertical: R5,200
    • 5,000L vertical: R8,400
    • 10,000L vertical: R15,500

Prices are for SABS-approved JoJo or equivalent food-grade polyethylene tanks in dark green or black. Slimline tanks for side-of-house installs cost roughly 20% more.

    2. The plinth

A tank full of water is heavy — 5,000L is 5 tonnes. You need a level, load-bearing base. Options:

    • Compacted crusher-run pad with paving slabs: R1,500 – R2,500
    • Cast concrete plinth (150mm reinforced): R3,500 – R6,500
    • Steel raised stand (for gravity feed, 1.5m): R8,500 – R14,000

    3. Pressure pump and accumulator

A backup tank with no pump just sits there. To pressurise the house off the tank you need a pump matched to your number of bathrooms and a small accumulator tank to stop the pump cycling on every tap.

    • 1.1kW pump + 24L accumulator (up to 2 bathrooms): R5,500 – R7,500
    • 1.5kW pump + 50L accumulator (3–4 bathrooms): R8,500 – R12,500
    • Variable-speed (VSD) pump for whisper-quiet operation: R14,500 – R22,000

    4. Automatic mains changeover

The clever bit. A solenoid or pressure-sensing controller switches the house onto the backup tank the instant municipal pressure drops, and switches back when it returns.

    • Manual ball-valve changeover: R850 – R1,400
    • Automatic float-switched changeover: R3,500 – R5,500
    • Smart pressure-controlled changeover with app monitoring: R6,500 – R9,500

    5. Filtration

Optional but strongly recommended. A 5-micron sediment filter on the tank inlet and a carbon block on the cold supply removes 90% of the grit and chlorine taste.

    • Sediment + carbon dual-stage: R2,800 – R4,500
    • Add UV steriliser (for borehole or rainwater): + R4,500 – R7,500

    6. Installation labour and COC

Pipework, fittings, pump wiring (by our registered electrician), commissioning and a Plumbing Certificate of Compliance: R4,500 – R7,500 on a standard install.

    Typical packages, all-in

    • 2,500L family backup, 2 bathrooms: R14,500 – R18,000 installed
    • 5,000L family backup, 3–4 bathrooms: R22,000 – R28,000 installed
    • 10,000L with VSD pump and dual filtration: R38,000 – R52,000 installed
