Electrical faults rarely announce themselves loudly — they whisper first. Catching these seven warning signs early is the difference between a quick repair and a house fire or insurance nightmare.
1. Breakers that keep tripping
Frequent tripping means a circuit is overloaded or a breaker is failing. It is the most common reason to call for fault finding.
2. Warm or discoloured plug points
A plug that is warm to the touch, or shows brown scorching, signals a loose or overloaded connection — a genuine fire risk. Stop using it and call an electrician.
3. A burning or fishy smell
An acrid or fishy smell near outlets or the board often means overheating plastic. Switch off the main and get it checked urgently.
4. Flickering or dimming lights
Lights that flicker across the home or dim when an appliance switches on suggest loose wiring or an overloaded circuit — not just a bad bulb.
5. Buzzing or crackling sounds
Electricity should be silent. Buzzing from a switch, plug or the board means arcing — a serious hazard that needs immediate attention.
6. Old rewireable fuses or no earth leakage
If your board still uses wire fuses, or has no earth-leakage protection, it is dangerously out of date. Consider a DB board upgrade.
