A brown ring or damp patch on the ceiling beneath an upstairs bathroom is a warning you shouldn't paint over — water is getting somewhere it shouldn't, and it's working on your ceiling and timber. Here's what's usually behind it.
The usual causes
- Failed shower waterproofing — or cracked grout/perished silicone letting water through the shower floor or walls.
- A leaking shower drain or waste connection
- A leaking pipe in the floor
- A leaking toilet or basin connection above
Why the stain isn't under the source
Water runs along beams and pipes before it finally drips through, so the ceiling stain is often not directly below the leak. That's exactly why guessing — and randomly breaking tiles — wastes money. It needs proper tracing.
Why it's urgent
Ongoing water rots ceiling boards and timber and can eventually bring a ceiling down — on top of wasting water and damaging structure. Prompt action is far cheaper than a collapsed ceiling.
