The options, briefly
- Heat pump — extracts heat from the air, uses a fraction of the power of direct electric heating, works in most conditions. The efficient all-rounder.
- Solar pool heating — cheapest to run but weather-dependent and slow to warm.
- Gas — heats fast but costs more to run.
Why a heat pump wins for most homes
Like a home heat pump, a pool heat pump moves heat rather than generating it — roughly a third of the power for the same warmth. Add a pool cover to retain heat and the running cost is very manageable for the extra months of swimming you gain.
The electrical side
A pool heat pump is a substantial load and needs a dedicated, correctly-protected circuit and isolator, wired compliantly for a COC — especially given the proximity to water (see pool electrics). We handle that side of the install.
