1. Your water bill has jumped with no change in usage
The most reliable early-warning sign is your Joburg Water account. If the consumption (kL) has doubled or tripled with no extra people, no new appliance and no garden change, you almost certainly have a concealed leak. Average suburban household use is 15–25kL/month — anything above 35kL deserves investigation.
2. The water meter ticks with every tap closed
Close every tap, toilet and outside hose. Stand at your municipal meter for 60 seconds and watch the small red leak-indicator dial. If it's moving, you have an active leak somewhere between the meter and the house — possibly in the underground supply line or inside a slab.
3. Warm patches on floor tiles (hot-water slab leak)
A hot-water pipe leaking inside a concrete slab heats the tiles above it. Walk barefoot across the kitchen, bathroom or scullery in the morning — a noticeably warm patch on otherwise cool tiles is a textbook slab leak sign.
4. Damp patches, bubbling paint or efflorescence on walls
Water tracking inside a wall cavity will eventually show up on the surface as peeling paint, white salt deposits (efflorescence) or a permanent damp patch that doesn't dry out. By the time it's visible the leak has been running for weeks.
5. Persistent green patches in an otherwise dry garden
An underground mains leak feeds whichever piece of garden it runs under. If one section of lawn is brilliant green and spongy while the rest is dry, that's almost certainly where your main supply pipe has failed.
6. Reduced water pressure across the whole house
If pressure has steadily dropped on every shower, basin and outdoor tap — not just one — a hidden leak is bleeding pressure out of the system before it reaches the fixtures.
