Your geyser is the single biggest electricity user in most South African homes — often 30 to 40 percent of the bill. Choosing the right hot-water system is the highest-impact energy decision you will make. Here is how electric geysers, solar geysers and heat pumps really compare.
Quick comparison
| System | Upfront cost | Running cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric geyser | From R5,500 | Highest | Lowest budget, rentals |
| Solar geyser | R18,000–R35,000 | Lowest on sunny days | High daytime hot-water use, good roof |
| Heat pump | R18,000–R30,000 | Low, year-round | Busy family homes, consistent savings |
Electric geyser
Cheapest to install, most expensive to run. A standard element converts electricity to heat 1:1, so every unit of hot water costs full tariff. Fine for a rental or a tight budget, but the running cost adds up fast.
Solar geyser
Uses the sun to pre-heat or fully heat your water, with an electric element as backup. On a sunny Highveld day it can cut water-heating electricity by 60–70%. The catch: savings depend on weather, roof orientation and using hot water during daylight.
Heat pump
Works like an air-conditioner in reverse, extracting heat from the air to warm your water using about a third of the electricity of an element. It runs day or night, rain or shine — which is why it usually delivers the most consistent year-round savings for a family home. The smart-controller multiplier
Whatever system you choose, a GeyserWise smart controller schedules heating around your routine and can save a further 25–35%. We are accredited GeyserWise installers and can integrate it with solar and heat-pump systems.
Our verdict
For most Sandton and Midrand family homes, a heat pump plus a smart controller is the best balance of upfront cost, consistent savings and reliability. For high daytime water use with a good roof, solar is hard to beat. Tell us your household and we will size it properly — see energy efficiency or call 082 886 9119.
