Your distribution board is the heart of your home's electrical safety — and an old or overloaded one is a real fire and compliance risk. Here are the signs it is time to upgrade, what it costs, and why the COC matters.
1. Breakers trip for no obvious reason
Occasional trips are normal; frequent, unexplained tripping means the board is overloaded or a breaker is failing. It is the most common reason homeowners call us for a DB board upgrade.
2. The board is warm, discoloured or smells
A warm board, scorch marks or a faint burning smell are urgent warnings of loose connections or overheating. Switch off the main and call an electrician immediately.
3. You still have rewireable fuses
Old wire fuses instead of modern circuit breakers mean the board is decades out of date and offers far less protection. This alone justifies an upgrade.
4. There is no surge protection
Highveld lightning and grid switching destroy appliances. A modern board with whole-home surge protection is cheap insurance against expensive damage.
5. You are adding solar, an inverter, a geyser or an oven
New high loads need proper circuits, isolation and often an essential-loads sub-board. Upgrading the DB board first makes any solar or backup-power install safe and compliant.
6. You need a COC and the board fails
Selling or insuring your home means an Electrical COC. An outdated board is one of the most common reasons a property fails inspection.
