A fully blocked main sewer line is one of the few plumbing problems that genuinely cannot wait. Every flush, every shower and every load of washing makes the backup worse. Here's exactly what to do in the first 15 minutes — and what to avoid — while you wait for a drain machine to arrive.
The early warning signs
- The downstairs toilet bubbles when the washing machine drains.
- The shower tray fills with dirty water when you flush.
- The lowest gully in the garden is overflowing with grey water.
- A sewage smell suddenly appears in the en-suite or scullery.
All four are symptoms of the same thing: the main connection between your house and the municipal sewer is blocked, and waste is taking the path of least resistance — back into the fixtures on the lowest floor.
What to do in the first 15 minutes
- Stop using water immediately. No flushing, no showers, no dishwasher, no washing machine.
- Lift the gully or rodding eye outside. If it's overflowing, you've confirmed it's a main-line blockage rather than a single fixture trap.
- Move anything valuable off floors in bathrooms, sculleries and downstairs rooms.
- Close internal doors to contain any overflow to one area.
- Phone a drain specialist with a machine and CCTV camera — not a general handyman with a plunger.
What not to pour down
Please don't tip caustic soda, Drain-O, bleach or boiling water down a blocked drain while you wait. None of them will clear a root or wet-wipe blockage, and they make the job dangerous (and more expensive) for the technician who has to work in that water.
How we clear it
Our standard emergency response is: rod the line from the nearest IE to confirm the location, run a mechanised drain machine through the blockage, then push a CCTV camera through to confirm the line is fully clear and there's no underlying defect.
