If your bathroom mirror fogs up, the paint peels and a musty smell lingers, the culprit is moisture with nowhere to go — and the fix is an extractor fan. Here is why it matters and how it is installed safely.

    Why you need one

A bathroom with no window or poor ventilation traps steam, which condenses on walls and ceilings and breeds mould. Over time it ruins paint, ceilings and fittings. An extractor fan pulls that moist air out before it can do damage — one of the cheapest protections for a bathroom.

Why it is an electrician's job

Bathrooms are wet zones. The fan must be on a correctly protected circuit and wired to comply with SANS 10142 for areas near water. An electrician also ensures it is set up the way you want — running with the light, or on a timer that runs on a few minutes after you leave to clear residual steam.

    Vent it outside

Critically, the fan must vent to the outside — through the wall or roof — not just into the ceiling void, where the moisture would simply cause damp and mould in the roof instead. Correct ducting matters as much as the fan.

    Sort the damp properly

We install bathroom extractor fans wired compliantly and vented correctly. See our electrical services or book an installation — and if damp has already caused a leak or stain, our leak detection team can check it is condensation and not a hidden leak.
